The Job Doctor Can Cure the Pain in Your Career or
Help You Find a Whole New Career
Sigmund Freud said we
need love and work to make us happy. Some of us work to live,
to pay for other passions like mountain-climbing or caving;
some of us have a "job," not a career, and we do what we must
to put food on the table. But many of us have dreams,
aspirations and frustrations all tied up in what we do from
9:00 to 5:00. Our career is our primary daytime
identification. It pays the bills; it's where we find a
measure of success and - we hope - use our talents. If we lose
our job, it can send us into a deep depression.
Yet workplace
statistics consistently show that 70% of us aren't happy with
our career. Maybe we followed our parents' advice into a "hot"
career that got cold by the time we trained for it. Or, we've
been doing it for 20 years and need a new challenge. Or, the
company is looking for heads to chop, and the axe is glinting
in our direction. There are plenty of reasons for job
dissatisfaction.
We all have questions
about our career, but where do you get the answers? You're new
at the job, but feeling lost at it. You're bored with your
work; how do you know if it's really time to go? You're on the
boss' bad side with no idea how you got there or how to get
back in a favorable light. What should you do?
Can I Lie on My
Resume? Strategies that Win the Career Game is a guide for
the perplexed in the workplace. It's 101 snippets of witty,
canny, to-the-point advice about all aspects of the career,
whether deciding "what I want to be when I grow up" to
thinking about retirement. Each brief essay concludes with
"The Point," for example: "Swimming with sharks is not for
bleeders or the fainthearted." Or, "Move the flagpole. Let
folks know you intend to make a mark."
Can I Lie on My
Resume? answers such questions as:
-
"Can I lie on my
resume?" (no of course not, but sometimes, sort of)
"How do I get off to a good start in my new job?" (move the
flagpole)
"What's the best way to succeed?" (have an hour of power)
"How do you get out of career trouble?" (don't bleed)
"What's the best way to resign?" (leave like President
Nixon)
Can I Lie on My
Resume? has these seven sections:
-
Figure It Out - How
to know what career is right for you.
Go for It - How to narrow your focus, once you have a career
direction.
Get the Job - How to beat the competition in going for the
job.
Do the Job - How to figure out how things work and get good
at your job.
Get Ahead - How to stand out from the crowd of co-workers.
Get out of Career Jail - How to get out of career trouble.
Leave the Job - How to resign, deal with being fired,
retire.
Author Rose Jonas,
Ph.D. is called TV's Job Doctor. Since 1991 she has appeared
frequently on radio and TV as a careers expert. She is
president of The Jonas Company (strategic coach for
executives, organizational consultant). A past human resources
director for a Fortune 100 company, she teaches graduate
classes in HR at Washington University in St. Louis.
Can I Lie on My
Resume? grew from a desire to "do something with all those
scripts" from Rose's weekly appearance on Monday morning TV
newscasts (NBC affiliate) for nearly a dozen years. Clients
and viewers would ask questions, and she was ready with the
answers when it was "Monday morning and time for our
appointment with The Job Doctor!" She learned that no matter
what function, role or position, people have many concerns in
common. Can I Lie on My Resume? also sprang from Rose's hope
to help career strugglers, no matter their age, stage of life
or spot on the organizational chart.
Can I Lie on My
Resume? is ideal for the newly minted college graduate
just beginning a career, or for the manager who's just stubbed
a toe on the mid-career blahs and asking, "Where do I go from
here with the rest of my life?"
